Frequently Asked Questions

What Oven Temp Works Best?

I recommend a minimum oven temp of 425°F up to about 475°F max. Higher than 500°F risks burning the beans. Temps below 400°F may not sufficiently trigger the maillard reactions for flavor development.

Can You A Microwave Or Toaster Oven?

Microwaves are not capable of grilling coffee beans. Toaster ovens can work but offer less control and space than a standard oven. I don’t recommend them for beginners.

How Much Coffee Do You Need For Oven Roasting?

For home use, I suggest starting with 200-300g batches. Large commercial batches won’t fit or grill evenly. Roast multiple small batches rather than one large one.

How Long Do Home Roasted Beans Last?

Like commercially roasted beans, home roasted coffee is optimally fresh for 14-28 days. After about 3 weeks, you’ll notice stale flavors. Only grill what you’ll consume within a month.
To achieve the perfect cup of coffee with a rich and aromatic flavor, try using the old popcorn popper method. It involves expanding the coffee beans during roasting by using two metal colanders. Place the beans in the colanders and shake them vigorously over a perforated baking tray. This process helps to evenly roast and caramelise the beans, creating a delicious brew. This will ensure an even roast, maximizing the flavors and aromas. As the beans heat up, you will hear a crackling sound, indicating the release of moisture and the beginning of the roasting process.

Can You Reuse Parchment Paper?

I don’t recommend reusing parchment paper more than a couple uses. The beans leave behind oils that can burn or impart off flavors if reused extensively. Use fresh parchment for best results.

What Green Coffee Has The Best Oven Grilling Results?

I suggest using specialty-grade Arabica beans from reputable roasters like Brazil, Ethiopia, Costa Rica, etc. Lower-grade Robusta beans won’t produce the same flavor complexity. Let the origin and roast profile guide your bean selection uneven roast,
